You’ve probably seen many couples who could pass for brother and sister. Twins, even. I’ve seen several myself and assumed they were siblings until they kissed or held hands (no stereotype jokes, please!) and realized they were a couple. Maybe you look like your partner; check him out when you see him today. Do you both have the same facial features? Body types?

There’s some science to this. In one study, men and women were asked to look at photos of 60 couples and asked to rate their similarities to each other from a scale of 1 to 9; 1 meaning hardly any likeness and 9 indicating possible opposite sex twins. Some of the couples were really together, some not. The outcome showed that the fake couples scored at 3.52 while the real couples scored a 4.05. The study concluded that the notion of people being attracted to others who look like them had real scientific merit.

People are cashing in on this particular science. A new dating website is opening soon, called Findyourfacemate.com. The premise is that yes, people do tend to look for partners that look like them, so why not help them out? People will download their photo and be matched with potential dates who share similar symmetry and physical facial features. While it doesn’t guarantee you’ll find someone who looks like your twin (which could be filed under “weird”, anyway) it will introduce you to matches who look like you.

Obviously, personality matters too. People who look like each other aren’t guaranteed to even like each other but the face match is where it’s all going to start. Time will tell if this match-making device will be a success or not.
