Recently the Los Angeles City Council approved an increase in funding for testing the physical evidence in rape kits, according to Human Rights Watch. Not too long ago I wrote an article about the fact that L.A. had about 12,669 untested rape kits simply lying around; they had not been tested due to lack of money.

With this recently approved increase in money 26 employees will be hired, and private crime laboratories will be used to help in the testing. Therefore the thousands of rape kits waiting to be tested will be decreased. Women's enews, from where this information was gathered, reports that the current method of testing DNA evidence is lengthy, thus causing rape victims and their families more suffering. Let us hope that now, with more funds available, the testing period will be shorter.

It is really heartening to see that the L.A. City Council has taken this whole matter of thousands of untested rape kits extremely seriously, and has acted accordingly.Rape victims who have the courage to come forth and report their rapes deserve nothing less.
