Diane Porter is spreading the word that there's been a change in the way the U.S. Census Bureau is gathering some of its information this year. And it may reflect a change in attitude from the U.S. government concerning sexual minorities.

For the first time, sexual minorities are encouraged to be honest about their personal situations for the Census Bureau. Gay couples are allowed to check the box for "Married Couple" for instance. And transgenders are allowed to choose which sex they identify themselves as.

There is some dissension from conservative groups about this change. But the attitude of the Census Bureau is that citizens who are part of a sexual minority, are an essential part of American society, and must be counted as such.

"Census officials say people are free to fill out their forms however they feel best reflects them — that the Census Bureau can no more tell people how to define their relationships than it can tell them what their race or gender is."
