Yohimbe is an herb that comes from the bark of the yohimbe tree, which is a tall evergreen tree that grows in western Africa. The bark of the yohimbe tree contains a chemical called yohimbine which is used as a dietary supplement.

Why yohimbe is used
Historically, yohimbe has been used in Africa as an aphrodisiac to increase sexual desire. Currently, yohimbe is sold as a supplement to treat sexual dysfunction. In women, yohimbe is believed to increase sexual desire when taken in combination with arginine. In men, yohimbe is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction means the man is not able to achieve or maintain an erection in order to have sexual intercourse. Yohimbe works by increasing blood flow to the penis. This can help the man achieve or maintain an erection.

How yohimbe is used
The bark of the yohimbe tree can be used to make a tea to drink. Yohimbine can also be extracted from the bark and made into capsules or tablets. Yohimbe supplements can vary significantly in strength based on the amount of yohimbine found in the supplement. Strong doses are more effective but also carry a much higher risk of side effects.

Cautions for yohimbe
Yohimbe has not been tested in the United States for safety or for effectiveness, so use caution when selecting a yohimbe supplement. Cautions for yohimbe include:

Dizziness - Use caution when driving or operating other hazardous machinery. Also be careful when getting up after sitting or lying down. You may also feel dizzy when changing positions.
Other side effects – Yohimbe has been known to cause high blood pressure, headaches, fast heart rate, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, tremors, and sleeplessness.
Large doses – Yohime can be dangerous if you take large doses or if you take the supplement for a long time.
Kidney problems – People with kidney problems should not take yohimbe.
Psychiatric conditions – People who have psychiatric conditions or who are taking medication for depression or any other psychiatric condition should not use yohimbe.
Women – Do not take yohimbe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you develop severe symptoms after taking yohimbe, especially difficulty breathing, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or if you become confused, get emergency medical help right away.

Because yohimbe supplements can have very different dosages of the active ingredient yohimbine, use caution if you change brands or methods of taking the supplement. Be sure to tell your health care provider about all supplements you chose to take, including yohimbe.
