Who'd have thought that the same gas that puts the bubbles in your favorite champagne could be responsible for the newest craze in skin treatment?

Dubbed the “Fizzy Facelift” women are opting for the no-trace treatment that uses the natural gas carbon dioxide and leaves no tell-tale signs. For those that are fearful of paralyzing their facial muscles with Botox or having a procedure that may make their face look and feel swollen, then carboxytherapy might be more up their alley.

The odorless, colorless gas is said to get rid of dark circles under the eyes, brighten and tighten the skin, fade stretchmarks and help reduce the appearance of cellulite, to name just a few benefits. Carbon dioxide is already present in the body so it is a more natural process as you are not introducing a foreign substance. There are no known side effects associated with carboxytherapy. It can be administered to the face, eyelids, neck, arms, stomach, buttocks and legs.

Carboxytherapy was first discovered in the Royal spas of France in the 1930s when bathing in the pools full with carbon dioxide people noticed the healing effects. It has been used ever since in France to help treat people with circulatory problems.

The procedure involves medical grade carbon dioxide being injected just under the skin. The needles are extremely thin, not unlike those used by acupuncturists. This increases the oxygeneration of the tissue. The body sees the high concentration of CO2 as a lack of oxygen and in turn the red blood cells release oxygen and rejuvenates the skin, improving circulation and stimulates collagen growth.

As we age, our bodies produce less cells and at a slower rate. Having carbon dioxide injected under the skin encourages cell growth and can lead to healthier looking skin, without the surgery.

Results are usually seen within one to two sessions for facial treatments and about four to five sessions for body treatments. According to women that have used the treatment it feels like a bee sting and on a similar pain level to electrolysis. You can expect to pay anywhere from $100-150 per treatment and each session normally lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) there was an estimated 2,299,282 Botox procedures last year and $10 million a year spent on cosmetic surgery.
