Dr. Svetlana Kogan knows we need to protect the amount of sleep we get. Too many of us are habitually getting too little sleep and it can cause real health problems when this sleep deprivation goes on for too long a time.

Dr. Kogan explains we especially need to guard our REM sleep, making sure to get enough cycles of REM sleep per night's sleep since adequate REM sleep can heal our central nervous system.

(Transcribed from video interview)

Dr. Kogan:
It’s different for everybody, but usually for an adult female we recommend anywhere between 7 to 9 hours of sleep. What we are after is a healthy amount of REM sleep, and the REM sleep is something we enter every 90 minutes and we are preferably going through anywhere between four to five cycles of REM sleep during a night’s sleep.

REM sleep is very healing to our central nervous system. If we don’t get enough of that precious REM sleep, we don’t feel well rested. We feel very fatigued during the day and that is something that we have to be working on with our patients.
