I don't talk much about having thyroid cancer in person. I talk about it online. Obviously the topic comes up when people notice my scar. Usually the reaction is, "Well,they say that's the best kind of cancer to get if you are gonna get it!" This is one reason I don't discuss it much. My standard reply is; "Yes, you are right! I have heard that before! I actually did a backflip after hearing I had Thyroid Cancer because it is the best!"
When I was diagnosed I was 33, a smoker, a single parent of a 4 year old, working full time and completely uneducated on thyroid issues. I have had so many bizarre situations in the past 5 years from having the ONCOLOGISTS I worked for not giving me time off for a Thyroidectomy; having the Frankenstein neck after surgery; the Biohazard sign on my hospital door (my favorite); sucking on Sour candy for 24 hours and trying to talk through plastic on the phone! It was all quite memorable.
I am currently cancer free- even though I still cringe when I get my Seraglobulin checked. After everything I have gone through, I have learned so much about myself, thyroid cancer and that sharing experiences with others makes me feel that there is a reason this happened to me.
I enjoy sharing my "comical outlook" online with others and I wish there would have been websites like this one to go to when my journey began.
