Greeting the New Year: We're Staying In

It's getting near the time for the big count down. The end of 2011, and the beginning of 2012 is approaching.

I could write some profound thoughts about the Brave New World of a Brave New Year opening its arms to us, inviting us to new adventures. But I think I already did that this week.

So instead, I'll just ask, What are your plans for New Year's Eve?

Do you have big plans to go with the big day? Have you gone shopping to buy a shiny new outfit to dress up the occasion?

Maybe you're looking forward to a gourmet dinner out at a restaurant that turns into a late-night party for the yearly "time change". Perhaps you'll grab a quick bite before you go out to a club to dance the year away on a busy dance floor. If crowds aren't your thing, maybe you and some friends will get together at your place to watch the year disappear over the horizon together.

Me? I'll be at home with my husband, my son and my daughter after she gets home from work. I'll be drinking kefir and avoiding the chocolate I'm sick of from Christmas. With any luck I'll be in my housecoat and slippers while we click through the channels to find a movie -- or two.

I'm looking forward to this and right now it's especially sweet. We just got Cable. We've been fighting with our little black boxes that are supposed to make great TV possible for the last couple of years. The boxes might work for you, or for half the country, but they don't work worth a darn at my house and they haven't for quite some time.

We got tired of having a television program bounce in and out, or disappear in the last few minutes when the mystery is solved or the villains captured and the hero saved the day. We were tired of being left in the dark when the show was over having no idea what just happened.

We had had enough of a black screen that announces (unnecessarily) that there's no signal. No kidding.

We don't watch TV all the time, but when we do, we'd like it to work. When we started having whole evenings of zero reception we decided it was time to make a change.

And the change has been so recent that being able to pick out something to watch on TV is a novelty that hasn't worn off by a long shot. A quiet evening at home seems like just the ticket to celebrate the advent of 2012.

So Happy New Year. We've got Cable.
