According to the Environmental Law Foundation, lead has been found in the food supply, specifically in many children's and baby foods. Some fruit juices and packaged fruits are among the categories of tainted foods. Lead was even detected in some organic foods.

There is no safe level of lead for the body. This is an even greater hazard for children due to the fact that they absorb lead in the environment faster and are at higher risk of suffering effects like decreased IQ.

Lead is stored in our bones. And more lead is released from the bones into the blood of pregnant and nursing women than normal. Consequently pregnant and nursing women can face a double whammy -- higher levels of lead in the blood for themselves, and lead passes from mother to child as well.

"Lead has been and continues to be released into the environment from decades of lead-based pesticide application, use of leaded gasoline and lead paint, and burning of coal in power plants. The lead in the environment then can make its way into the food supply. But not every category or even foods within categories contains lead."
