If everyone took omega-3 fatty acids every day, what kind of a difference would we see in health and health care?

Captain Joseph Hibbeln, M.D., thinks we'd see a huge improvement in people's health, and a great reduction in the cost of health care. He is looking specifically at two groups -- people over the age of 65, and pregnant women, with the view to prevent premature births.

Says Captain Hibbeln, "There’s been several economic studies done looking at, one in particular, The Lewin Group in 2007 calculated the cost of giving everybody over the age of 65, two grams of omega-3s a day for the prevention of heart disease, and it turns out that you save about $44,000.00 per person by treating everybody over 65 with cardiovascular disease with omega-3 fatty acids."

Captain Hibbeln is with the United States Public Health Service, and is the acting chief on the Section of Nutritional Neurosciences at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. In addition, Captain Hibbeln is an epidemiologist, a lipid biochemist, and a psychiatrist.
