Dr. Volkmar describes the tests used to diagnose Asperger's syndrome.

Dr. Volkmar:
Although Asperger’s disorder was described a year after infantile autism, or Kanner’s syndrome, interestingly, there has been much less work, not surprisingly, I guess, because Asperger’s is only recently recognized as an official diagnosis. There are a number of instruments used for a screening. I think the state of the science is much less well developed for Asperger’s than it is for autism.

Fred Volkmar, M.D. is the director of the Yale University Child Study Center and Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology at Yale University, where he heads the university's autism research and autism clinic. He is also Chief of Child Psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental nature of autism and developing better guidelines to diagnose autism and related conditions.
