My 14 month old daughter has GERD. She also has been sneezing a lot this Spring.....she has been stricken with laryngitis. Fever of 101, constant runny nose (clear). How do you know if this is allergy based or if it is GERD based? Will the laryngitis clear up on its own?

Hi Anonymous-
There are many causes of laryngitis, and GERD is one of them. But GERD does not normally cause a fever or a runny nose. Our site has an information page on laryngitis: https://www.empowher.com/condition/laryngitis
Common causes include:
Allergies
Viral or bacterial infection
Irritants such as smoke
In children there are a few forms of laryngitis that can be dangerous and impede breathing, such as croup and epiglottitis. The National Institutes of Health has a good explanation of this: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001385.htm
When a toddler has laryngitis it is a good idea to keep a close eye on her. If she seems to be in any kind of distress or if the laryngitis lasts more than a few days, it is worth a call to check in with your health care provider and get an opinion about whether she needs to be seen.
Signs of respiratory distress include audible wheezing, a barking cough, nostril flaring, use of accessory muscles (meaning you can visually see your child's chest and neck muscles working to assist with breathing). If you see symptoms like these you should seek professional help immediately.
One more good resource is the Mayo Clinic site: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/laryngitis/ds00366/dsection=treatments-and-drugs
Good luck. I hope she feels better soon.
