A few days ago, the Food and Drug Association said that one sample of baby formula had tested positive for the toxic substance melamine. But now the FDA says that several samples of infant formula have tested positive,
either for melamine or a related substance.
There were more than 12,000 children who were sick and hospitalized in China after they were fed formula that was tainted with melamine.
The FDA said two tests of a sample of Nestle's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron showed melamine at tiny levels. Also, Mead Johnson's infant powder, Enfamil LIPIL with Iron, had three positive tests for cyanuric acid, which is related to melamine, also in tiny levels.
Melamine is a chemical used in manufacturing cleaning products, can liners, flame retardant, fertilizers and pesticides. It does not occur naturally in food.
