Skin and skin conditions are very personal subjects for many patients. It's personal because every woman wants to look beautiful and skin conditions interrupt the natural beauty and softness of the face and body. Many of my patients that have come in with skin conditions feel self-conscious and try to cover up the body parts that are affected. If the condition on her face she may not feel attractive at all or it can affect her self image. For these reasons, I will spend the next month talking about different skin conditions and suggesting naturopathic treatments that have been successful for my patients.
Generally when patients come in with skin conditions the first visit I spend time with them explaining the purposes of the skin and possibly reasons why the skin problems are showing up. In the most basic terms the skin is one of the organs of elimination. One of its jobs is to get rid of waste products of the body. The main organs of elimination are the lungs, liver, small and large intestine, the kidneys and bladder. For example, the main organs of elimination are not working effectively when a patient has constipation. When a patient has constipation or is not having a bowel movement at least once every day, they are not releasing the toxins the body is ready to release. When this happens the toxins can be reabsorbed into the body and re-circulate. The skin then tries to help eliminate the toxins by allowing the toxins to come out through the skin. If the main organs of elimination are not working effectively then the skin will step in to help out. This is usually what we see as rashes, acne, bumps, roseacea, cystic acne, eczema, psoriasis and lupus to name the most common.
When I treat patients with skin conditions I always look at what's going on inside the body. I have found that when we focus on inside the body, their skin tends to get better. This means we focus nutrition, drinking water, appropriate sleep, correcting other existing conditions and eliminating toxins daily.
Next time I will focus on skin changes that happen during the menstrual cycle.
