Writing articles for the last two years has been a blessing and I have been given the luxury to write about anything that I have an expertise in. I have received feedback on my work that I value and check from time to time as well. One reader wrote that my topics are so varied that it is irritating to read my articles. This is the only negative comment I have received about my work so I took time think about the comment and I wanted to write a response.
I am a naturopathic doctor and in my oath I pledged to be consider my patients' mental, emotional, and spiritual as well as physical health. For me this means that I have a need to continuously read, learn and share information about all of these topics. It is quite a lot of material to cover in 400 words or less!
While this forum is not the same as treating patients I view it as an opportunity to use my voice to help people look at their health as a combination of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical components. I think physical health is probably the easiest topic to grasp when people are looking for advice. This is why I explain a disease process or recommend exercises or foods to eat that will help the body show improved health outcomes. When I started my blog I wrote many articles that were related to just these topics. I look at mental health in two ways: the first is the more traditional definition which includes mental health diagnosis and how can we use natural and conventional treatments to create optimal mental health. The second is having the mental thoughts or behavior patterns necessary improve the quality of your physical health. I try to give practical advice on how to change behaviors to improve the quality of your health.
The more I grow as a doctor the more I see that our emotional and spiritual well-being are the beginning steps necessary to achieve mental and physical health. This is why I have started to bring these elements into my practice and my writing. Meditation, prayer, the emotions associated with how feel about work, your family, your community and your world impact how much energy you expend on your personal health. This is why my articles take on so many areas of interest. In the future I will try to be very specific about how my writing relates to one of the areas related to the health and healing of the whole person. I believe that when the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects are in alignment the human being is experiencing true and total wellness.
