My husband sent me the link to an article that he came across called, “The Worst Reason to Work from Home.” It was geared towards working parents and I found myself intrigued.
The article listed reasons that working parents might have an interest in working from home. Saving time and money on a daily commute, being productive in a more relaxed atmosphere and surprisingly, to save money on child care were among the reasons listed.
As I read on, I thought, “You have got to be kidding me.” I do work from home and know first-hand that it is close to impossible to get work done when you are responsible for taking care of children. Even the most independent child will need something and keep you from staying on task.
That is not to say that if I am on a deadline, I can’t put on a television show to keep my kids busy while I work on a writing project but that is a rare occurrence. And when it comes to concentration, interruptions will keep you from staying focused.
Obviously, according to the article, the worst reason to work from home is to save on child care costs. It does add that working from home can be a benefit if you have child care in home as well. I tend to disagree.
Even when my husband watches after the kids so I can work, they always seem to want me for something. I find that my most productive work time is when my kids are asleep or out of the house. This leaves me to work either late at night, early in the morning or the times when my husband can be home and take them out.
I am thankful for the schedule flexibility. I can drive my boys to and from school. I can offer them the comfort of being at home when they are sick. All of this and still be able to fulfill my work commitments and deadlines.
There are times when I attempt to shut myself in our home office and announce, “I’m going to be working for a while.” But inevitably, interruptions do occur and I find myself sometimes wishing that I did have to leave the home in order to work.
