Clothes make the temperature. Everyone knows that before you step out on a cold winter’s day, you’ve got to wear lots of warm layers to trap your heat. On a hot summer day, you strip down to expose skin because the last thing you want to do is hold in the heat. You dress for weather, and when you go through menopause you have to start dressing for hot flashes, too.
Stop wearing polyester and synthetic fabrics, especially in the clothing you wear to bed. Instead, start wearing light, thin garments made from natural cotton and wool. Natural fabrics breathe to create cooling air flow around the skin. Keep your clothing lightweight and loose-fitting around your body. Tight, restrictive clothing that fits right against the skin will only make you feel hotter and make sweat much more noticeable when hot flashes strike.
It’s still a good idea to dress in layers. Wear lots of light clothing that you can take off bit by bit as hot flashes occur. Loose, blousy clothing is trendy and fashionable, but lots of women are afraid to wear it because they don’t want to look heavy. Stick to light colors, and trust short, backless and low-cut creations to show off your figure.
