Hi. I'm a health writer and one of my main clients is Sepsis Alliance. one thing we are constantly battling is the misnaming of this very serious and deadly disease. Blood poisoning isn't the accurate name for this - it is sepsis.
SA commissioned a study by Harris and in 2010, we found that less than one-third of Americans had ever heard the word, yet every two minutes, sepsis (not blood poisoning!) kills one American. Over 700 Americans a day. It causes amputations and severe body dysfunction in thousands of others. In 2011, the number of people who had heard the word went up to 42%, but that is still incredibly sad that such a major illness is unknown.
I invite you to visit sepsisalliance.org to learn more about why it should be called sepsis and not blood poisoning.
Thank you.
