Know about Ebola
Ebola is a virus which causes Ebola Virus Disease. Symptoms like fever, throat and muscle pain and headache start between two days to three weeks of contracting the virus. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea will be seen later along with decreased functioning of the liver and kidneys. Some people may have problems of bleeding too. This disease spreads through blood or bodily fluids. Monkeys and fruit bats are the usual carriers of the disease. It is said that fruit bats carry and spread the virus without being affected by it.
This disease has a high mortality rate. Hence prevention is a better option for human beings. Monkeys and pigs can be checked for the disease. If diagnosed with the disease, the animals should be either treated or killed. Their bodies should be properly disposed. Enough care has to be taken while cooking meat. Wearing protective clothing is necessary while handling meat. We need to wash hands very frequently when Ebola is found in the surroundings. Samples of bodily fluids and tissues of people with the disease should be handled with extra caution.
Treatment for this disease has not been invented so far. Persons infected with this disease should be given oral rehydration therapy or intravenous fluids. Physical manifestation of Ebola begins with an influenza-kind of stage characterized by fever with chills, sore throat, severe headaches, weakness, joint pain, muscle pain and chest pain. In order to make the diagnosis, other diseases with similar symptoms like malaria, cholera and other viral hemorrhagic fever are first excluded. The blood may then be tested for antibodies to the virus, the viral RNA, or the Ebola virus itself to confirm the diagnosis. This disease has a high mortality rate which ranges from 50% to 90%. If an infected person survives, recovery may be quick and complete, or prolonged with long term problems.
