Everybody has emotions. If you are human you will have emotions of your own. Some of them may help you get through the day and others can potentially disrupt your life. I have recently worked on a research paper based on the issues of human emotions. I would like to contribute some of the findings here. It is often believed that one should be able to control one’s emotions. Displaying emotions as they are felt within oneself is often seen to be a sign of immaturity. People tend to judge others by the way emotions are displayed or held within. Those who can overcome their emotions are often appreciated for their ability to suppress them. They are seen as mature people who have understood the meaning of life and so on and so forth. Trust me, suppressing emotions is a myth. I would go so far as to state that it is foolish to suppress your emotions.
Every human being is different when it comes to expressing one’s emotions. There are some who are introverts and silently laugh or sob within. There are extroverts that will display everything that they feel. Suppressing emotions is a rather nonsensical way of deluding oneself into believing that an issue has been solved. For instance imagine that you have had an issue with your boss and he has fired you. You will obviously not shout back at him. You will have to patiently listen to what he has told you and then go back home. The suppressed emotion that you had during your time at the boss’ office will manifest itself at home. You may shout at your wife or kids. Now, is this the ideal thing to do? Absolutely, not.
I would advise you to vent out your feelings at places where you will not harm yourself or others. Suppressing emotions may lead to depression. The emotions will never leave you and chances are that they will return with renewed vigor and torment you even more. There are studies that have proven that the more a person tries to suppress his/her negative thoughts, the stronger they will be when they come back. This is the reason why we tend to get obsessed with the things that we cannot get and think unwanted thoughts. The best way to do is to get rid of the thought by replacing it with something positive. This way you are not controlling your emotions but channelizing it in a different way.
Don’t feel that showing your emotions makes you appear weak in front of others. We live in a society and other human beings are there to support you and be supported. Bottling up your emotions will only destroy you from within. There is no point in trying to be strong from outside when you are withering from inside. It is okay to show that you are angry, sad or happy. It does not make a difference. If you are always bothered about what others may think about your outbursts then you probably do not deserve to live in a society. All emotions have a purpose and as soon as they are met, these emotions will go away. So, be yourself and enjoy every emotion in your life.
