Ah! The moment in time when you think, feel and know that the office work is caught up, but wait did I leave the last load of laundry in the dryer?
How many times do working women rack their brain about work while cooking dinner? Did I send that email? Then they get into the meeting that they’ve prepared for and thought to themselves, did I put an icepack in with my son’s lunch box, his sandwich, OMG its chicken, it’s going to be hot today, what if…?
As women we are truly gifted with the talent of multitasking, however, we are too hard on ourselves on a daily basis. If you sit down and journal your thoughts and activities for a one day period starting from that early morning alarm clock awakening until you fall into bed knowing you just can’t do anymore, then it’s time to revisit your daily schedule.
Work/Life Balance is about having calmness in knowing that everything does NOT have to be perfect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Has this been instilled in our brains from our previous generations of mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmother’s?
When I look back at my Nana, she had a disability in that she had polio in her right leg as a child in England. My great-grandmother Alice brought her to Canada (literally on a boat) in the hopes of saving her leg, which essentially did end up occurring. My Nana walked with a limp as she practically dragged her right leg. Even when I look at how she lived her life, she was not in a hurry. She embraced each moment whether at work or at home and especially at a party! The “AHA!” moment is that she lived regardless of what she was doing and enjoyed each and every moment.
There is no perfect. Work/Life Balance is about a mindset. Enjoy what you have. If you left a load of laundry in the dryer, it’s ok. If you burnt something on the stove, it’s ok. Take time to enjoy these moments and maybe you should have a good, hard laugh at yourself! Laughter is the best medicine and it’s even more enjoyable if you are laughing at something you did! This does not mean you do not have Work/Life Balance, it represents that you are truly embracing progression NOT perfection. And that my friend, is true balance at its best.
