1) Gum disease
Gum (Periodontal) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. The process starts when excess amounts of plaque are left on the tooth. The plaque, if left untreated will turn hard and become more difficult to remove. This hardened plaque is called tartar. Tartar becomes difficult to clean, and the more it builds up, the highest risk you have of developing gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums where they become red, swollen, sensitive, and can lead to bleeding. If this gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to the periodontitis stage, which leads to infection causing your bones, gums, and tissues which support your teeth to deteriorate. In severe cases, this can lead to the tooth having to be extracted.
