A court in Lille, France, annulled the marriage of a French Muslim couple at the request of the bridegroom when he discovered on their wedding night that his new bride wasn't the virgin she'd made out to be. He tossed her out that very night.
You can read an article on it in the International Herald Tribune: http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/10/europe/virgin.php?page=1
There was major outcry this week from the French public, including plenty of feminists, with demands for the resignation of Rachida Dati, the Minister of Justice, after she upheld the ruling. According to the article, Dati, who is a Muslim, backed down and ordered an appeal.
The SCARY issue that came out of the article is how more and more Muslim women are turning towards hymenoplasty, which is an expensive (and painful, we're talking lots of stitches in a very delicate place) surgery to "restore" the hymen. Basically to pretend to be like a virgin again.
And what's even SCARIER are the stories of the women who are choosing to have this surgery done. In the article, one 32-yr-old woman said she elected to have the surgery done to avoid her father's wrath. She said she "wasn't afraid he would kill me, but I was sure he would have beaten me."
YIKES. Run, girl.
Another woman lost her virginity four years ago to her fiance, and now that they're planning to marry, they're splitting the cost of her upcoming hymenoplasty because his very traditional family will require a certificate of authentic virginity from a gynecologist prior to their marriage.
I'm telling you, that woman should run too. And far....
