It took perimenopause to bring me to my knees in my early 40s, before I knew what it meant to have hormone imbalance issues. My years of fertility were easy years. I never struggled to conceive children....even though I didn't begin having them until I was close to 40 years old, having my last one at nearly 43.
PMS was something that other women suffered with. Unpredictable cycles? No way! I often joked that my cycles were so regular that God could set the clock of the universe by them. I had it that good.
Until perimenopause came along.
So, I guess life and mother nature always finds a way to humble you and perimenopause certainly did just that. I was an absolute raving lunatic with mood swings, rages, anxiety, panic attacks, heart palpitations, vertigo, hot flashes, night sweats and erratic, flooding, blood-clot laden menstrual cycles.
I thought God was punishing me for all those years I so harshly judged women who suffered with their menstrual cycles. I was certain they had problems with their attitudes, not their cycles!
I've passed through those turbulent years and now count myself among the proud, the not so few, the women of menopause. But, I've learned a great deal about how much women suffer with their health, especially their hormone health.
Because of my experience, I started blogging about perimenopause at my blog, The Perimenopause Blog to take up the cause of women who also suffer as I did.
I have a deep passion and desire to help women understand perimenopause and how it affects their bodies. I'm currently finishing my Master's degree in the field of Health & Human Development with a focus on Health Communication and Healthcare Advocacy for women's hormone health issues and their experiences in the medical system.
Hi Everyone Thank you to Kitchenista for starting such an important group on such a topic! It's not something we have talked much on in Groups at all! I think sexism in health is certainly not ...
