First, let me state that my family practiced feng shui - we're Asian and from San Francisco where any number of elements of ancient Chinese culture are alive and well. I also used to run a feng shui message board at iVillage.com.

Secondly, there is old school vs new school form. Old school, sometimes referred to as "Geomancy," is very complicated and has the interesting beginning in positioning the body after death for the most beneficial afterlife experience. New school, a Western form often called "Black Hat" is more forgiving to the Western lifestyle.

Also, it's not a verb. It drives me nuts to hear people say they've "feng shui'd their room or house."

There are experts and there are experts. One of the most respected modern experts is Simon Brown, who was taught by masters of the ancient form.

Ehe leading "Black Hat" expert is Lin Yuan.

There are prolific writers on the subject. One of the most prolific is Lillian Too.

Feng shui has been "trendy" for decades in the UK and on the West Coast. Like Susan warns: be careful about so-called "experts." A true expert has spent years in study and practice with a master. Here's a very brief, chronological history of feng shui.

Bottom line principle: clear the clutter - in your home, in your finances, in your life.
