Alison, do you have a Trader Joe's near you?

They have their own brand of Uncured Beef Hot Dogs, which the package says are nitrate free, with no fillers, gluten, msg, antibiotics or hormones. I'm not sure about the salt content, though.

I might toss you a suggestion from the vegetarian corner of the room: try veggie hot dogs! I know many meat-eaters will immediately say "ewwwww" at this suggestion, but honestly, some veggie soy products are nearly as good as the real thing, and they've got much less fat in them, and far fewer issues like hormones or antibiotics.

Here's RealSimple magazine's ratings of the best veggie hot dogs:

Give them a try! With catsup, mustard and relish, you might be surprised, and feel guilt free at the same time.
