Alison,

Thank you for your great question. There really is no one food that will help or one that is more detrimental. What we do know is foods that are high on the glycemic index (especially refined carbohydrates) will spike your insulin levels which leads to your body wanting to store fat. On top of this, many individuals skip meals and don't eat enough, so their metabolism is slow and when they finally eat if it is something that will spike their insulin levels the body will store fat even easier. The best thing you can do is eat 4-5 small meals throughout the day and make sure each meal has 10-20 grams of protein in it along with a high fiber carbs (fruits, veggies, whole grains). Adding some healthy fats (i.e. fish oils, flaxseed oil, olive oil, almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.) will also help the body to burn fat more efficiently.

Thanks again for your question and feel free ask me any other health related question you have.

Scott.
