Dear Anon:
D&C is usually a diagnostic procedure and seldom is therapeutic. It is indicated when irregular or unusual bledding is detected. D&C will help stop the bleeding for a little while (2-6 months), and unfortunately there are times when the prior abnormal bleeding may return.

A D&C is SELDOM done as a lone procedure anymore. It is most frequently done as an adjunct procedure to a hysteroscopy and/or polypectomy. So you may want to ask your doctor the purpose of the D&C so you are well-informed of her reasons for wanting to do one on you. It would not hurt to have a second opinion too.
