While any one of us might be able to recommend hiking or running shoes, the recommendations may not be best for you. Our feet aren't generic, after all.

Personally, I go to REI for outdoor sports gear, and I prefer Mizuno Wave for my running shoes.

If at all possible, you should be properly fitted by a running store for running shoes. By the same token, you should seek the advice of someone at an outdoor fitters for hiking shoes. These are not interchangeable with running, or even trail running, shoes.

You mentioned shin splints. Shin splints are the result of over-stride and weak calf muscles. Ill-fitting shoes can also contribute to this injury. Just because your shoes feel fine does not mean they are correct for your foot, especially considering the issues you're having. Are you warming up prior to your hikes and workouts? Are you stretching afterwards?

Hope this helps.
