My words of encouragement are that there are actual relationships that include compromise, negotiation, non-threatening behavior, respect, trust, support, honesty, accountability and shared responsibility. These are the true signs of lasting love, a real partnership with another person, and can be seen on the Equality Wheel.

As a teenager, I remember the love-of-my-life boyfriend was someone who was very concerned with how I looked, how I dressed, who I was hanging out with. He was possessive and jealous, which I mistakenly thought were signs of care and love. ("He loves me so much that he's jealous when I go out with my friends!").

Relationships that include equality and nonviolence are not jealous; this is not a sign of love, it is a sign of distrust and disrespect (a boyfriend "owning" you makes you an object, and you are their possession). Unfortunately, movies romanticize this notion, however in the real world, the consequences are unromantic and lead to immature love, jealousy and possible violence and lack of respect.

For a better-quality Equality Wheel than the link provided above, go to Equality Wheel pdf version. Everyone deserves their relationships and partnerships to be filled with only those aspects from the Equality Wheel.
