Susan, that's a wonderful post, and very very timely. With so many people looking for work, all of our radar needs to be up. Scammers get more and more creative all the time, even going to the point of seeming "offended" when you ask them for more information or for proof or for references.
Be smart, and be strong. You are your only best advocate when it comes to defending yourself from people trying to prey on your vulnerability right now. They understand how badly you want it to be true, and they use that in your favor. Do what Susan and Miscortes have suggested -- call the BBB or check on the company yourself through Google or another search engine. If they are a good company, you'll be able to tell.
