My experience has been similar, as when I have been trying to lose my pregnancy weight (albeit 2 years later!), the only thing that is actually flattening my stomach is reducing my calories by 500 every-single day and exercising 5-6 times per week for 60 minutes. I'm losing weight everywhere, including my stomach.

A few of the exercise classes I take are cardio; others are strength-training. I've noticed a huge difference in my abs from the core-strengthening and crunches that cardio was not giving me...I can see some definition in my abs and waist. However, to flatten your stomach as you say, I think you do need to lose weight through good 'ol diet and exercise, and the toning comes through crunches or other strength-training (lifting weights, pilates, yoga, etc.)

good luck!
