Hi, Anon, and welcome to Empowher! Thank you so much for your question.

I'm very sorry that you're experiencing such hip pain after you have sex. Can I ask you a couple of questions?

How bad is the pain, on a scale of 1 to 10, say? Is it similar to the kind of pain we have after a gym workout or anything else that stresses our muscles when we aren't used to it?

Have you ever had any sort of injury (back, hip, pelvis, etc) that might be contributing to your pain in this position?

The short answer, without the answers to your questions, is that if you are new to sex, yes, it would be perfectly common to be sore in places you aren't used to. It might feel even sorer if you don't feel that you are a particularly flexible person. And I would guess that it is your muscles and tendons that are hurting, not your actual hip bones. But I would also think that it would ease over a fairly short period of time. Is your "hunny" someone who perhaps is much larger than you are, which might contribute to the weight your hips are bearing during sex? If so, you may also need to talk with him just to let him know that you're hurting and that it's not pleasurable for you; perhaps he can support even more of his own weight while having intercourse in that position.

One thing that might help you is to attend some yoga classes, specifically Vinyasa Yoga or Flow Yoga if it is available to you, but any kind of yoga would help. Yoga helps our strength, our flexibility and our ability to help stress leave our bodies. If, for instance, your hip flexors are simply too tight, yoga classes will help stretch and strengthen them. And one of the beauties of yoga is that nearly everyone can do it regardless of their stamina or level of strength going in.

Here's some information about Vinyasa Yoga:

Please write back and give us any more information that might help.
