I have a friend, a marathoner, who has a condition that prevents her from feeling the ground under her left foot due to nerve damage. She has to have the nerves stimulated by a little machine so that she can feel the sensation of striking the ground. It's very scary for her - and for the rest of us who worry about her when she goes out on a run by herself. Unfortunately, she is also prone to bone fractures, but keeps on running!
I don't know if your condition is anything like hers, but you made me think of her when you described not being able to get across the street by yourself. Let's hope your doctors will be able to pinpoint what's going on so that you can get appropriate treatment.
