It is irrelevant what your history is for taking birth control; if you do not take a prescription, it does not work. Birth control pills are only 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently (every day) and correctly (about the same hour every day).

If you have not been using your birth control for a month, then you would not be protected from pregnancy.

If you have had your period AFTER unprotected sex, that period indicates you are not pregnant for this cycle. Any unprotected sex you have in the future could result in a pregnancy.
