I agree with Alysia--- the Pearl Compak may be the best option for you.
I never liked the cardboard or no-applicator tampons, but the O.B. tampons without applicator are "popular" (meaning: women find them comfortable). The cardboard applicators were difficult for me to use, so I always opted for plastic.
There are tampons made smaller for teens, and you can look for these names on the box: compak, teen, slender, slims, lite, sport.
I realize you were going to a swimming party a few days ago, but for future reference, you can go to the brand name websites and get a free trial of each tampon to see which one you like (be sure to make sure you OK this with others you live with---they would need to be OK with getting junk mail or advertisements, and might prefer to just buy several different kinds!)
