I've had the same problem. I have never ever been able to use just a tampon, I always have to wear a liner with them. When I remove mine they're never full and even if they appear to be almost covered on the surface, they never "flower" open, which means it always goes around the tampon and into the liner. Because of this, I can never have peace of mine and wear only the tampon for swimming. I realize the flow stops while in water, but when you're getting out there's a highly embarrassing scenario possible in that moment. God forbid you're out on a boat or something with nowhere to turn to take care of business. The freedoms that tampons are supposed to give us, aren't created equally. I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe it's my body shape? Maybe it's bc I'm a virgin? No clue. And before you recommend proper insertion, let me assure you, I'm doing it right. I'm in my 30s and while that little fact J just mentioned about my history may lead you to believe I may be uninformed, that is not the case. I'm planning a vacation for Memorial Day week and I hate the fact that I have to worry about maybe choosing a vacation that doesn't include tropical locations, bc my cycle is that week. I've considered menstrual cups, but I know finding the proper size will take some time. Is this a manufacturing issue that tampons are so tightly wound that they don't flower easily or is this simply bc I'm too tight? I suppose there is no way to answer that aside from asking a doctor, but it is nice to know that it's not just me. I just wish I could find an answer. My much younger sister does not have this issue and I have to admit this makes me feel quite juvenile that I am having to worry about something you'd think could have been solved decades ago for myself and others.
