Please call your son's pediatrician. It really does not matter if other people's toddler was officially diagnosed, given a "wait and see", if they had a spinal infection, or even an injury that was not witnessed (toddlers just beginning to walk do get lots of bumps and bruises!).
It is important that your 17 month old son be properly diagnosed, regardless of what someone else's experience is...they just do not relate. If your son suddenly can no longer walk, and is resorting to crawling, please call his doctor and talk with a nurse about his symptoms. He needs to be checked to rule out any possible physical (or behavioral) causes.
