The thing is, studies in favor of moderate acohol consumption overlook the kinds of people who make up the groups being compared in the first place.
Usually, many life-long abstainers abstain because of a pre-existing medical condition that MAKE them abstainers in the first place, whether it be a pre-existing heart condition or something else. Hence, many of the abstainers being compared in these studies are probably unhealthy to begin with. It is therefore likely that alcohol isn't the operative factor here, but rather the pre-existing health conditions of the subjects.
