Dear kyimyaayemaw, Congratulations! I'm all too familiar with this subject because less than 5 months ago I was in your shoes.

To answer your question, your OB will most likely want to see you 6 weeks post partum and perform a physical exam to see if you have healed well (or are healing well). Provided everything looks good and you feel good- he or she will give you the green light for sex.

These recommendations work both for cesarean sections and vaginal delivery. Keep in mind that during vaginal delivery there are factors such as tears and episiotomies which will affect how quickly you recover. The reason why you should also wait 6 weeks if you have a c-section is because even though the baby did not come out of your vagina you will have undergone major surgery, which takes time to recover from. Your body will also expell any fragments of your placenta left in it and you will bleed, vaginal delivery or not.

Remember that these are standard recommendations and that everyone heals at a different rate and has a very different childbirth experience. Some people will require less than the 6 weeks and some will require more. Just be sure to take good care of yourself, eat a balanced diet (especially if you will breastfeed), and let your body do its healing.
