Hi,
I am sorry to hear that your doctor did not think your symptoms or concerns were valid. You are not alone, though as low levels of iron can cause hair loss, and there are treatment options available.

Are you able to see another doctor for a 2nd opinion? There are true medical causes for female hair loss, and a doctor "blowing you off" does not have your best interest at heart.

Medical causes for female hair loss can include:
- PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
- hormone imbalance
- autoimmune disorder (alopecia areata--an inflammatory condition that causes hair to fall out in clumps or patches)
- temporary shedding called "telogen effluvium", from "childbrth, crash dieting, surgery, thyroid disorders, anemia, chronic illness, certain medications, traumatic emotional events. etc".
- genetics is actually the most common cause of hair loss for both men and women

It is advised that you see a doctor who specializes in female pattern balding, and possibly can confirm if this is indeed from your anemia, surgery or any of the medications you have been taking. Hopefully it is temporary, and treatable with medications (such as FDA-approved Rogaine or Propecia), and/or other treatment options.
