Hi, Gloria, and welcome to EmpowHer. I'm so glad you found us! And congratulations on being such a good advocate for your own health and wellness!

Were you told you have Carotid Artery Disease, by any chance? It is a disease that causes the two carotid arteries to narrow or become blocked, due to a condition called atherosclerosis (which is hardening of the arteries). It's caused when plaque builds up on the walls of the arteries. Here's a very good page on exactly how it happens:

And here is the Mayo Clinic's page on it:

You mentioned that your blood pressure is controlled and that you take medicine for your thyroid. Do you also take medicine that helps thin the blood (to help prevent blood clots)? Has your doctor recommended that you be on a daily aspirin routine?

You are already doing many of the things you need to do to help prevent your conditioning from worsening. A healthy diet (low in saturated fats) and regular exercise are primary. I assume you do not smoke! If you did, quitting would be your first priority. And lowering your sodium intake can also help slow the progression of the buildup of plaque. You are so active that I assume you are at a good weight; but if you were overweight, that would be something else to work on. Anything that you can do to ensure your good health reduces the stress on those arteries and slows the progression of the disease.

Here is a page that refers to natural remedies for conditions of the heart and blood. Be sure that your doctor knows all the supplements you take, because you wouldn't want to create any negative drug interactions:

Do any of these resources help?
