Sugar has a short-lived "alerting effect", then can actually make a person feel more sleepy.

It probably depends more what your boyfriend's overall lifestyle: what he is eating throughout the day, what is activity level is, is he overweight, does he drink caffeine or smoke, use alcohol, etc. These factors seem to have more to do with interrupting sleep than sugar, especially the (most likely) small amount found in a lollipop.

I am interested to hear what others say about this topic.
