As a lupus (SLE) patient, myself, all I can say is that you need to be your own best advocate and insist that your doctor explain things to you in layman terms. If you do have RA, t's likely you'll be referred to a Rheumatologist.
Lupus is not the easiest condition to diagnose, and the arthritis associated with lupus is not necessarily RA. Here's some information from the Lupus Foundation to help you understand lupus.
