I think that you have good instincts. Yes, hormones influence nearly every part of your body in some way or another, and it's possible that they would be the cause of your irregular cycles and/or your hair loss. Have you had your hormones tested? How long ago? And did the doctor give you your actual hormonal levels, or just say they were "normal" ?

Have you ever taken (or has a doctor ever suggested taking) birth control pills to help regulate your cycle?

You say that the bleeding and cramps are awful when you do have a period. When it is extreme like that, endometriosis can sometimes be a cause. I thought I'd give you a link to our encyclopedia page on endometriosis so you could check your symptoms:
