It sounds like you did have a period on January 29th, even if it was only 3 days. Sometimes, for no "apparent" reason, our cycles can be shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, different color of discharge (pink, red, brown), cramps/no cramps, etc.

Especially since January 29th was around the time of your expected period (your previous period ended December 29th), the most logical explanation is that this WAS your period.

I am curious if you and your husband are having unprotected sex? If you are using protection (birth control pills, condoms, etc), then the likelihood of pregnancy is slight. If you are not using protection, I am curious why you say "pregnancy would be a surprise", as the likelihood of pregnancy would be significantly increased.

Have you had unprotected sex after the 3 days of bleeding on January 29th?

Another thought: let's say that January 29th was not a period (which it sounds like it was), but bleeding for 3 days that seemed like a period is not a sign of a viable pregnancy. Signs of pregnancy include the absence of bleeding; not shorter or different bleeding. Fluttering in your stomach and other "signs" of pregnancy can be misleading, too, as many women are hopeful of a pregnancy and know in their hearts that they are feeling this sensation...but fluttering that you can feel (as you know from your previous 3 pregnancies) does not actually occur into much further into the pregnancy.

Are you tracking your periods? If so, how long are your cycles typically? You may not be expecting your next period for a week or two, and any unprotected sex you have had after January 29th would not show up on a HPT as positive. You mentioned that you have 3 young children, but I am wondering if you are trying to become pregnant?

Does this information help?
