ADVICE from someone who suffered extremly heavy flows and lots of pain due to polycystic ovaries syndrome.
1. If you feel your pain is too much, or your flow too heavy, go to a doctor or talk to a parent/adult you trust. It can be a sign of underlying problem/illness, but even if it's not, you will get pills specifically for this. It can be embarassing, I know, even humiliating, but it can save you lot of pain (and underwear). Keep your ground if someone tells you to 'suck it up' or 'it always hurts, you're overreacting'. No one knows your pain better than you do, especially if it's preventing you from normal activities.
2. Heat is always good, whether it's a heat pad, or a small pillow on your abdomen. That being said, socks to keep your feet warm can work wonders.
3. Take a hot shower, letting the water on your stomach. If nothing else, it'll make you feel clean.
4. Eat a piece of chocolate or your favorite sweet.
5. Rubbing/palpating abdomen where it hurts can help. Also, if you have small pillow, curl around it so it pushes into your abdomen. The pressure can relax the muscles.
6. Rub/press the two dimples on your lower back. I know this sounds crazy, but it helped me in the past.
7. Lie on your back and bend your legs above your stomach. Keep it for several minutes.
8. If you feel like crying, do. It will make you feel a lot better.
9. Try to keep your mind of it. Play a game, read a book, whatever grabs your attention. It doesn't help if you focus on the pain.
10. Drink lots of fluids, preferably water and juices. It can be a real game changer.
11. This is bit of a silly one, but if you have someone to rant to about how awful your periods are, do it. Not only it's a distraction, but (like crying) it makes you feel better.
12. Sleep plenty if you can, even if it's lot more than usually. Periods are exhausting for your body.
13. Eat plenty of red meat and/or iron supplements. Last thing you need with heavy flow are symptoms of blood loss.

I hope this helps. All these tips work for me or for my friends, so with luck they will for you. I'm afraid this is very individual but they're worth a try.
