One caution about spermicide: it can cause vaginal or penile irritation, so please know that if one brand or form (suppository, gel, foam, cream) does not work for you, that there are others to try.

Nonoxynol-9 is the most common spermicide used, and has been linked to an increased risk for STIs (sexually transmitted infections). It sounds like you and your partner are monogamous, but I did want to let you know that this is not a good option for people who have multiple partners. (This spermicide can increase risk for STIs because it can irritate the vaginal tissues, creating better entry-way for infection).

Spermicide, when used alone, is not very effective at preventing pregnancy, but it is better than using no birth control.
