I have recently been diagnosed with Hashimotos Disease, one week ago had a total Thyroidectomy to remove papillary thyroid cancer on my thyroid, two of eight lymph nodes were positive for cancer, and I have been celiac for over eight years and remain gluten free. I have been told my cancer is stage three. I would like any input any one may have on my situtation. In a few weeks I will be doing the radioactive iodine treatment to zap any cancer remaining. I have lived with the painful body and muscle aches for at least one year, not knowing what it is. Been to several doctors for them only to treat me with cortisone to remove the pain.(ie knee, hip busitis). I never had any symptoms in my neck until about one month before I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. I have gained several pounds and because of my age(52) I have chalked it up to menopause. Everything seems to be blamed on menopause. Why don't doctors have more insight to look into this? You have to be your own advocate for your self! It is up to you because you are the only one that knows your body. I actually started this process because I was having gallbladder symptoms. To rule out an ulcer, my doctor had some blood work done. While preparing the paper for blood tests, I encouraged my doctor to test my thyroid as long as I was having blood drawn. To go one step further, I encouraged him to not only test my TSH, but to test T3, T4, antibodies, and thyroglobulin. Those test results are what lead me on this journey I am taking right now with papillary thyroid cancer. The test results came back while I was on my way to the hospital for my gallbladder ultrasound. A thyroid ultrasound was included by fax and two nodules were found. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE! If just the TSH was run, my doctor would have probably just put me on a small dose of synthroid to treat hypothyroidism and the nodules never would have been found.
I am preparing for the radioactive iodine treatment on Dec 29th and hope I have excellent results to rid ANY remaining cancer cells in my body. I hope this helps any one else that may have symptoms and don't know which way to go. I am also a support group lead of our community celiac group and never realized how celiac and the thyroid go hand in hand. I have always had it checked but always just the TSH. Low and behold, after the thyroid was removed, my aches and pains all went away only to have to stop my meds to prepare for the radioactive iodine treatment. I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel now. After this treatment, my meds will be adjusted again and the aches and pains from Hashimotos will diminish again. God is in control and I know that he is leading me on this journey. While on this journey, it is my goal to help others along the way. I have already witnessed to a nurse while I was in the hospital overnight for my thyroidectomy. God has a plan for me! God Bless everyone and know the journey you have to take is NEVER taken alone.
