Have you tried asking him to blink twice in response to questions? we kept asking my husband to follow something with his eyes, squeeze our hands, or wiggle his toes. Well, guess what . . . he was blind, and couldn't move his hands or toes. So, there was no way for him to respond. (he can now see and has recovered most of the use of his fingers and toes). But, once I started asking him to blink twice, it was clear that he was hearing and understanding.
